Jimmy White lost his opening match at the Benson and Hedges Masters for only the third time in 17 appearances when he was defeated by Stephen Lee at Wembley yesterday.

White, a wild-card invitation, crashed to a 5-1 first-round defeat in only 74 minutes. "I can't ever remember playing worse than that here," White said. "I'm very annoyed and disappointed."

Runs of 39 and 33 gave White the first frame before Lee fired in breaks of 85 and 86 to move 2-1 ahead. Leading 65-32 in the fourth, White missed the last red and Lee was able to snatch a 3-1 advantage at the interval with a 35 clearance. He wrapped up proceedings when play resumed with breaks of 114 and 49.

"I've surprised myself with this," admitted Lee, who will now face Stephen Hendry in the second round.
