MARCO VAN BASTEN was yesterday named Fifa's World Player of the Year for 1992. The 28-year-old Dutch striker finished ahead of the Bulgarian forward, Hristo Stoichkov, and the German midfielder, Thomas Hassler, in a poll conducted among national coaches from 70 countries.

GORDON WALLACE, Dunfermline's assistant manager, has been fined pounds 250 and banned from the dug-out for six months by the Scottish FA for remarks made to a linesman during his side's defeat by Ayr United in the Scottish Cup last month.

BARNET will attempt to have their pounds 50,000 fine for financial irregularities reduced when they appear before an FA appeals committee today.
