LEO BEENHAKKER, the Dutch coach, has agreed to leave Real Madrid even though his contract runs for a further two years. Ramon Mendoza, the club president, has hired Benito Floro from Albacete to replace him in response to Real's failure to win either the league title or the Spanish Cup. Real, who were eight points clear midway through the season, were pipped by Barcelona in the league when they lost 3-2 in Tenerife after leading 2-0. And they were beaten 2-0 in the Spanish Cup final by Atletico Madrid last Saturday.

JORGINHO, the Brazilian international, has succeeded Gary Lineker as the winner of Fifa's annual prize for fair play. Jorginho, 28, who joins Bayern Munich next season after three years with rival German side Bayer Leverkusen, will receive a cheque for pounds 13,369 at the Fifa congress in Zurich tomorrow. The pounds 27,738 award for a club or association goes to the Spanish FA.

COLIN O'NEILL, the former Northern Ireland international, has been appointed manager of Irish League side Coleraine. The 29-year-old midfielder, who was with Scottish Premier Division club Motherwell last season, was forced to retire from playing because of a serious knee injury.

SCOTT SELLARS has refused new terms offered by Blackburn Rovers. The England Under-21 midfielder returned from holiday seeking a new four-year agreement, but was only offered a two- year deal. Blackburn have signed 19-year- old midfielder Lee Makel from Newcastle, but the Premier League club's pounds 200,000 offer is unlikely to be accepted and the transfer fee will probably be settled by a tribunal.
