DESMOND DOUGLAS, winner of the National title a record 11 times, captured the men's singles title at the Cleveland Open at Thornaby, Middlesbrough last night. After a major shock in the semi- finals when Douglas, 37, defeated the top seed, Chen Xinhua, he went on to beat Reading's Matthew Syed 22-20, 21-5 in the final.

CLEVELAND FIVE-STAR INTERNATIONAL OPEN (Middlesbrough): Men's singles, semi- finals: D Douglas (Warwicks) bt Chen Xinhua (Yorks) 22-20 21-15; M Syed (Berks) bt S Andrew (Essex) 16-21 21-10 21-17. Final: Douglas bt Syed 22-20 21-5. Women's singles, semi-finals: L Lomas (Beds) bt K Goodall (Yorks) 21-7 21-12; E Timina (Rus) bt A Holt (Lancs) 21-13 17-21 21-19.
