Matthew Maynard, the Glamorgan captain, could be out of action for up to six weeks after breaking his finger in practice.

The opening batsman Andrew Hudson has announced his retirement from international cricket after 35 Tests for South Africa.

Steve Bernard, the Australian team manager, said yesterday that he had "heard nothing" about the Barbados police chief filing a libel suit against the team captain Steve Waugh. Grantley Watson, the police commissioner, has apparently filed a writ in the Supreme Court claiming damages from Waugh for remarks that he allegedly made following bottle-throwing by spectators who interrupted the seventh and final one-day international of the Australian tour of the West Indies in Bridgetown, Barbados, according to the Weekend Nation newspaper.
