Brian Lara yesterday scored his 5,000th run in one-day internationals as West Indies ran up a record 293 for 8 against South Africa at the Quadrangular Cup in Lahore. The one-day record total was to no avail as South Africa reached the target with 11 balls to spare, hitting 297 for the loss of five wickets.

The Australian ers' Association is believed to have set a tentative date of 19 December for an historic strike if negotiations between themselves and the Australian Board fail to end the dispute over pay and conditions.
