PEDRO DELGADO, the Spanish rider, retired from professional competition yesterday when he finished fifth in the last event of the season, the Montjuic mountain climb and time trial. Delgado, 34, started his career with the Banesto team in 1982, winning the Tour de France in 1988 and the Tour of Spain in 1985 and 1989.
