ATLETICO MADRID named Emilio Cruz as their new coach yesterday. Cruz, who acted as assistant to the current national coach, Javier Clemente, at the club in 1989-90, replaces the Argentinian stand-in, Cacho Heredia, who took charge three weeks ago after Jair Pereira was sacked. The Spanish club had offered a short-term contract to the German, Uli Stielike, and then the Serb, Vujadin Boskov, but both men turned them down.

SWINDON TOWN have been forced to cancel a friendly match in Greece this weekend after a virus laid low players and staff of their scheduled opponents, Edessaikos.
