ATLETICO MADRID named Emilio Cruz as their new coach yesterday. Cruz, who acted as assistant to the current national coach, Javier Clemente, at the club in 1989-90, replaces the Argentinian stand-in, Cacho Heredia, who took charge three weeks ago after Jair Pereira was sacked. The Spanish club had offered a short-term contract to the German, Uli Stielike, and then the Serb, Vujadin Boskov, but both men turned them down.

SWINDON TOWN have been forced to cancel a friendly match in Greece this weekend after a virus laid low players and staff of their scheduled opponents, Edessaikos.

ZIMBABWE have named Gibson Homela as their new national coach, after the German, Reinhard Fabisch, was sacked last month when they failed to qualify for the World Cup finals next year.

MARIUS OOFT resigned yesterday as the coach of Japan's national team, following their failure to qualify for next year's World Cup finals.
