RUGBY LEAGUE

Halifax, one of 12 clubs who will make up the new Super League, have launched a pounds 100,000 appeal to finance buying new players and urgent ground safety work. A public meeting will be held on Sunday to discuss ways of reaching the cash target before the start of the shortened final season on 20 August.

Ian Watson, the Salford scrum-half, has been drafted into the Wales squad for their two-match tour of the United States which starts next week, after Warrington's Kevin Ellis and Keighley's Andy Eyres both withdrew from the party.
