The executive of the South African Rugby Football Union refused to resign last night despite a request to stand down by South Africa's leading sports body, the National Sports Council. The NSC asked the executive to resign by 11 April or risk international isolation after Sarfu had resisted an official investigation into allegation of corruption and mismanagement. Earlier in the day, Vodacom, the cellular telephone company who sponsor rugby to the the tune of 30m rand (pounds 3.75m) annually, announced that they would not support the game if Louis Luyt, the Sarfu president, did not resign.

CLUB MATCH: Newport 55 Royal Navy 23.
