LARRY KLEIN, a former world champion yachting captain, has died after being thrown from his boat during a weekend race in San Francisco Bay. He was 42. Klein was leading the fifth race of the 31st Big Boat Series when his boat's outboard port hiking rack collapsed. He and six crewmen aboard the Twin Flyer were dumped into the bay between San Francisco and Alcatraz Island. The other crew members were rescued. Klein was a strong swimmer but crew members believe his foul- weather gear may have made swimming difficult in the choppy water.

NEW ZEALAND plan to compete in next year's Admiral's Cup series off Cowes in England after a six-year absence. The New Zealanders won the Cup in 1987, but have not challenged since 1989.
