BORIS BECKER, the three-times Wimbledon champion, who has been embroiled in public rows about Germany's Davis Cup team, will play no part in helping his country defend their title this season. The team captain, Niki Pilic, said yesterday the Becker would not be selected if Germany reached the final after this weekends's semi-final against Russia because he had not competed in the earlier rounds.

GERMANY have decided to play the Davis Cup semi-final against Russia outdoors, despite the wet and windy autumn reputation of the northern port of Hamburg. A hard court has been laid on the clay courts which normally host the Hamburg Open tournaments in May. The other semi- final is between Sweden and the United States.

CAMBERLEY'S Nick Weal produced one of the best performances of his career when he upset the eighth seed, Sebastian Le Blanc, to reach today's semi-finals of the LTA Summer Satellite Masters event at Ealing.
