SPORTS LETTER : Division bell sounds
From F. J. Arnold
Sir: Martin Johnson is right in saying the problem with English cricket lies with the system rather than the personnel [13 June].
One only has to look at Rugby Union. Those in charge may or may not be old farts, but they must be doing something right. The solution is to divide the first class game into two leagues, with promotion and relegation. This would concentrate the best players and every game would be meaningful. I would rather watch my county striving for promotion in the second division than playing a middle-of-the-table game with nothing much at stake.
Yours faithfully,
F. J. ARNOLD
