Sports letter: Genuine Jewell

Sir: I listened to Bradford's young manager, Paul Jewell, on the radio at the weekend before his team played their first match in the Premiership at Middlesbrough.

He talked with enthusiasm and, above all, emotion, when he spoke about what Bradford's promotion meant to the local community and everything they had gone through, especially the Bradford fire, in which the father of Stuart McCall, a member of the present squad, was badly injured. This, he said, was for them and those who died.

A few hours later I was not surprised to learn that Bradford City, playing away to Middlesborough, had scored a late goal to win their first Premiership match 1-0, a scoreline that left me, and I'm sure many other genuine football supporters, with a good feeling all weekend.
