Sports Letter: Playing for love of game

Sir: So Alan Watkins (7 December) believes that Gary Connolly could have been bought. When will rugby unionists realise that people play league not just because of money, but because they enjoy the game. There are hundreds of amateur league clubs all over Britain who do not pay their players.

Look at Jonathan Davies and his emotional reaction at the end of the England-Wales World Cup semi-final in 1995. He did want to return to Wales but he was sad to leave rugby league.

It is ironic that the game that is derided in the media for being one- dimensional is the one that has produced the skills that union needs.
