Sports Letters: Bridging the golf gulf

Sir: The different proposals of the USPGA and IMG included in the report of 7 January 'Ryder v world scheme' could both be covered by returning to a four-yearly match between Asia/Australasia and Africa/Americas in the Ryder Cup year. Then two years later the two winners and the two losers could play each other.

In the non-Ryder Cup years, the matches outside the United States and Europe (Australia and South Africa would almost certainly be the venues initially) should attract sufficient support to overcome any financial worries about loss of revenue every fourth year.

Currently Asia/Australasia could field 10 or 11 world-class players as opposed to probably eight from Africa/Americas, but the 'tail' in both teams would vanish before too long.
