Sports Letters: Gower, Sobers and art of poise

Sir: The sanctifying of David Gower shows that his idolaters have committed the cardinal sin of believing their own propaganda.

In his heyday this helmeted hero was compared with, and called equal to, Gary Sobers. Fortunately, some of us have good memories.

King Cricket was, like your hero, left-handed, but there never was an occasion when he was left out. Mediocrity was not his middle name.

The finest memory I have of Muhammad Ali is of him having Jerry Quarry helpless on the ropes and going to the referee saying 'he's had enough'.

A sportsman indeed.

If only others would follow his example.

Yours faithfully,

RON JONES
