Stephen Hendry has been made the bookmakers' favourite for the Regal Welsh tournament, starting on Sunday and ending on 31 January, after his first win of the season in France last weekend. The World No 1 won the Canal + European Challenge in Epernay and, though not a ranking tournament, the win will provide a fillip for Hendry in the defence of his title at Newport in an event that boasts the world's top 10 players, who qualified automatically, and 17 in the top 20. Hendry opens his defence against Tony Jones, ranked 22, but who qualified in Blackpool last summer. John Parrott, the No 2 seed, plays Steve Lemmens, the Belgian who is ranked 234.

How to get there: Newport Centre, Kingsway, Newport, Gwent. Close to bus station. Admission: Sunday to Friday (sessions 2 and 7pm) pounds 2. Saturday (Semi-finals) 1pm pounds 2.50; 7pm pounds 3. Sunday 31 January (Final) 2pm pounds 4 7pm pounds 5. (Tel: 0633-259676).
