Peter Marshall, the former world No 2, is attempting a comeback in the SRA National League with Broxbourne this autumn after being out for most of the past 18 months with chronic fatigue syndrome.

Fiona Geaves and Linda Charman led an English charge in the first round of the Perrier Women's World Open Championship in Malaysia yesterday. Geaves, the ninth seed, and Charman, seeded 15th, produced 19-minute victories over America's Amy Milanek and Louise Finnegan, of Ireland, respectively.
