Squash: Geaves faces world champion after second-round surprise

FIONA GEAVES booked herself a British Open Championships quarter- final against the world champion Sarah Fitz-Gerald after pulling off a second-round surprise in Birmingham yesterday.

The English No 6 and world No 11 defeated the eighth-seeded Liz Irving, of Australia, 9-4, 5-9, 9-6, 9-6 in 57 minutes. Fitz-Gerald needed only 24 minutes to remove the England No 8 and world 17, Rebecca Macree of Essex, on the recently finished all-transparent Perspex court, which was still receiving finishing touches yesterday morning.

In the men's event, the 10th seed, Dan Jenson of Australia, came from two games down and two match balls down in the fourth game to defeat the young Canadian Graham Ryding 10-15, 10-15, 15-11, 15-14, 15-2 in 86 minutes.
