THE CHANCES of Peter Marshall gaining another meeting with the world champion, Jansher Khan, improved when he reached the last 16 of the PIA / CAA World Open and then saw the other seed in his quarter get beaten here yesterday, writes Richard Eaton from Karachi.

Nevertheless the England No 1 had to play a hard 74- minute match, and survive a particularly tough second and third game against his compatriot, Mark Cairns, before winning 15-11, 11-15, 15-9, 15-8.

Marshall hurled down his racket in exasperation after losing the second game and was asked by the referee not to do so again.

Later, Sami Elopuro, whom the seedings said Marshall should meet in the quarter- finals, was beaten in straight games. The seventh-seeded Finn lost 15-11, 15-13, 15-13 to Craig van der Wath, the improving South African.
