Earth Summit is out for the rest of the year after breaking down and pulling up in the Greenalls Grand National Trial at Haydock on Saturday, while the 1993 Gold Cup winner Jodami, also pulled up behind Lo Stregone in the same race, is coughing.

Earth Summit, who was in second place when pulling up, was initially thought to have cracked a bone in his near-fore, but his trainer Nigel Twiston-Davies reported yesterday: "He has damaged a suspensory in his near-fore and will be out for the rest of the season, but the injury is nowhere near as bad as everybody first thought."

Jodami "gurgled during the race and coughed in the stable afterwards", according to his trainer Peter Beaumont yesterday."The vet hasn't seen him yet. We will have some news at the end of the week," he added.

n Today's meeting at Newcastle goes ahead provided there was no further overnight rain.
