Paul Gascoigne was yesterday given a three-month suspended jail sentence in Italy for punching a photographer in Rome while he was playing for Lazio in 1994. Gascoigne was not in court to hear the sentence. Costs and damages have yet to be decided.

A prosecution lawyer for the photographer, Lino Nanni, had sought a six- month sentence for the player, who lashed out after pictures were taken of him with a blonde woman.

Gascoigne's defence had argued that he had acted legitimately to defend his privacy and had been exasperated by the photographer's actions on 24 June, 1994.

The photographer, who needed hospital treatment after being punched in the face by the player in the incident said he was merely doing his job.
