Symonds sprints to half-century

Andrew Symonds had no worries about who he was playing for yesterday and produced the sort of form that had earned him the chance to turn down a place on the England A tour. His swift 54 off result-inducing bowling helped Gloucestershire to a 19-run victory over Durham at Bristol. The visitors typically played a part in their own downfall with a middle-order collapse on their way to 236 all out.

A century in each innings by Hugh Morris and some fiery bowling by Darren Thomas enabled Glamorgan to beat Nottinghamshire by 189 runs at Cardiff - only their third victory of the season.

Somerset's Pakistani spin bowler Mushtaq Ahmed took 4 for 57 but was unable to prevent their match against Hampshire at Southampton ending in a draw. Hampshire chased a target of 298 in 70 overs but, with rain preventing any play before lunch, the hosts managed only 190 for 5. Lancashire's match against Kent and Yorkshire's against Sussex were also drawn.

Devon won their fourth trophy in four years when they beat Lincolnshire by 57 runs at Worcester - in a match reduced by rain to 50 overs a side - to lift the Minor Counties title for the second successive season.
