Wang ends Prean's run

Carl Prean, England's last survivor, put up a gallant fight but was overcome by Chinese power in the third round of the World Championships in Manchester yesterday. Wang Liqin, who defeated the former world champion Jorgen Persson of Sweden on Friday, beat the 29-year-old Isle of Wight player 21-18 21-15 15-21 21-10 to move into the last 16. Meanwhile, players at the tournament threatened to go on strike when a shortage of seats meant that they could not watch their team-mates in action. The organisers eventually capitulated and arranged for an extra 900 seats to be provided.
