Taylor topples the new arrival: Tennis
Claire Taylor, the national junior champion from Banbury, captured her first senior international title at the LTA women's satellite tennis tournament at Telford today. She overpowered Katia Roubanova, the 15-year-old daughter of the LTA coach Olga Morozova, 6-3, 6-0 in 51 minutes. Roubanova, now eligible to represent Britain in international competition, was unable to find the form that had seen her upset the second seed, Amelie Castera, in the semi-finals. In France, Michael Stich similarly could not discover the power and fluency of his quarter-final performance in the Marseilles Open and was beaten 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 by Switzerland's Marc Rosset. In the final, Rosset plays the Frenchman Arnaud Boetsch.
