Former champions Yevgeny Kafelnikov and Albert Costa made unexpected first round exits from the Swiss Open in Gstaad yesterday. The top seed Kafelnikov, the 1996 French Open champion and winner of the Swiss title in 1995, was brushed aside 6-4, 6-3 by Marc Rosset before the Swiss player's home crowd. Costa, the defending champion and No 5 seed, fell to the American Richey Reneberg 6-2, 1-6, 6-4.
Pat Cash, the former Wimbledon champion, was left considering his future after he was beaten 6-3, 6-1, by the third seed, Sergi Bruguera, in the first round of the Swiss Open. "I still believe I can play competitive singles on certain surfaces, but if I can't consistently play in tournaments, there really isn't any hope to compete" Cash said.
