Britain's Chris Wilkinson, who chose to miss this week's Guardian Direct British National Championships, lost 6-7, 7-6, 6-4 to Martin Damm of the Czech Republic in the first round of the ATP Challenger tournament in Aachen, Germany.

Monica Seles withdrew from the Bank of the West Classic in Oakland yesterday with knee problems. She will also miss next week's WTA Tour event in Philadelphia and does not know if she will be able to play in the season-ending WTA Tour Championships in New York in a fortnight's time.
