Tennis: Simple for Sampras
Pete Sampras and Stefan Edberg each won in straight sets to reach their appointed confrontation in the semi-finals of the Champions Cup in Indian Wells, California. The top-seeded Sampras had 11 aces in a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Thomas Muster of Austria. The third-seeded Edberg, from Sweden, beat Darren Cahill of Australia, 6-4, 6-3. Sampras lost only five points on his service in the opening set against Muster. Sampras won 16 out of 17 points at one stretch spanning the two sets. Muster broke Sampras' serve for the first time in the fourth game of the second set, but Sampras came right back to break the Austrian's serve and go up 4-1. Edberg won only one tournament last year, but has been sharp this week, allowing only two break points in his three matches.
