World number four Serena Williams has pulled out of the French Open with an ankle injury organisers announced yesterday.

The 23-year-old ace, who won this year's Australian Open, has lifted seven Grand Slam titles in her career, including one in the French capital in 2002 with victory over her sister Venus.

The 23-year-old world No 4 sustained a left ankle sprain in the quarter-finals at Amelia Island last month. She returned to action last week in Rome but lost her opening match 7-6, 6-1 to the Italian Francesca Schiavone. Williams called the defeat the worst of her career.

Williams was one of the top contenders to lift the trophy again this year along with Lindsay Davenport, Maria Sharapova and Amelie Mauresmo.
