Heather Watson claimed back-to-back wins for the first time since February to reach the quarter-finals in Poitiers.

After a tough first-round victory over world No 69 Christina McHale, the 21-year-old again came through a tight match to defeat Czech Lucie Hradecká 6-1, 4-6, 6-4.

Watson has dropped down from the WTA Tour to the second-tier ITF circuit in a bid to end a very difficult year on a high. In the last eight in France, Watson will meet either American Alison Riske or Canada's Stephanie Dubois.

Meanwhile Serena Williams took a major step towards qualifying for the semi-finals at the season-ending WTA Championships in Istanbul after beating third seed Agnieszka Radwanska in straight sets. Second seed Victoria Azarenka lost to Jelena Jankovic and must now beat Li Na in her final match to progress.
