Wimbledon 2017: Adrian Mannarino fined £7,000 for barging into ball boy

Adrian Mannarino has been fined $9,000 (£7,000) after barging into a ball boy at Wimbledon.

The French player appeared to bump into the youngster while walking back to his chair during his second round win over Japan's Yuichi Sugita on Thursday.

Mannarino was subsequently penalised by the umpire Marijana Veljovic, who believed the collision to be deliberate. Mannarino was docked a point and later given two fines for 'unsportsmanlike conduct'.

The 29-year-old, who will play compatriot Gael Monfils on Saturday, protested to the umpire who admonished him but to no avail.

“What did I do? I was just passing by. We were shoulder to shoulder,” he said. “I was just trying to move. I was slowing down, (he) was close to me, I had to stop it.”

He added: “It's a joke. I'm hurting myself just not to hurt (him) and you give me a warning.

“Ball kids are the priority, right? I cannot walk to my chair? I'm not hitting him. I'm hitting him as much as he's hitting me.”

Veljovic told Mannarino that his behaviour was “unacceptable” and television replays appeared to support the umpire's decision.

American player Jack Sock was also penalised on Thursday. The 24-year-old was given a fine of $4,000 (£3,100) for verbal abuse.
