Found on the Web: The German 2006 bid.

MUCH HAS been made of England's battle with South Africa to stage the 2006 World Cup, but Germany has also submitted a solid bid. This site includes full details of the campaign and a countdown to next year's vote. Less convincing are the "10 reasons for Germany", which include the fact that 35 million newspapers are sold daily in the country. So?

Read Of The Week

MANSLAUGHTER UNITED by Chris Hulme; Yellow Jersey, paperback, pounds 10.00

AN ACCOUNT of the year Chris Hulme spent with the Kingston Arrows, a prison football team. Like all amateur football teams, they had the usual sprinkling of talent; what made them unique was that nine of the players were convicted murderers serving life sentences and the other two were warders. They play in a local league (home games only). Hulme talked to them about their lives inside and out, while supporting them in their attempt to win the league for the first time in 10 years of trying. It's an uncompromising account of an ordinary game played by extraordinary men - a remarkable story indeed.
