Today#: In 1987, Mike Tyson became the first undisputed world heavyweight champion since Leon Spinks in 1978, when he outpointed Tony Tucker in Las Vegas.
Tomorrow: John Charles, the Leeds United and Wales centre-half and centre- forward, joined Juventus for pounds 65,000 in 1957.
Wednesday: Juan Fangio won the German Grand Prix in 1957 to seal his fifth and last world title. In 1976, England beat Australia in Lord's first women's cricket match.
Thursday: In 1970, Manchester United became the first British football team to win a match by penalty shoot-out. After their Watney Cup semi- final against Hull City finished 1-1, they won 4-3 on penalties, George Best scoring the first.
Friday: In 1926, 19-year-old New Yorker Gertrude Ederle became the first woman to swim the English Channel, in 14hr 39min.
In 1961, Stirling Moss took his 16th and last F1 victory, in the German Grand Prix.
Saturday: In 1711, Queen Anne attended the Ascot race meeting - earning it the "Royal" prefix. In 1926, Brooklands hosted the first British Grand Prix.
Sunday: In 1900, American doubles tennis champion Dwight Filley Davis helped launch the inaugural Davis Cup in Boston. Davis, who donated a cup, was the first to propose a tournament for international teams. The competition, known as The International Lawn Tennis Championship, was won by the US, who beat Britain 3-0.
