PRIDE of place goes to those 'unloved' Canaries in the Uefa Cup. Norwich City did what no British club had done - they won away against Bayern Munich. Relishing their role as more sophisticated underdogs than Wimbledon, they took a two-goal lead after 30 minutes through Goss and Bowen. Bayern could only get one back.

Aston Villa's 1-1 draw against Deportivo La Coruna sets them up nicely for progress alongside Norwich.

A two-goal lead does not always guarantee success. Manchester United got there in 17 minutes less than Norwich against Galatasaray in the European Cup but were then overrun by the Turks and only a late Cantona goal gained a 3-3 draw.

Great Britain dominated New Zealand at Wembley, 17-0. Rugby league's rising star, Jason Robinson, scored two tries on his

debut. Another Wigan winger, Martin Offiah, returned after five months absence and scored for his club.

London and South-West won the first matches in rugby union's unloved Divisional Championship and Wales beat Japan 55-5. Not much to set the pulse racing there, but the All Blacks arrived - that should.
