DAMON HILL, trying to emulate Nigel Mansell's British Grand Prix wins of 1991 and 1992, led from the start at Silverstone. He seemed on course to win the race which his father, the legendary Graham Hill, never won when engine failure in the 42nd lap forced him to retire. His team-mate, Alain Prost, won the race and consilidated his position as the championship leader; Hill slipped from third to fourth.

Derbyshire started cricket's Benson and Hedges Cup final as underdogs, but Dominic Cork's unbeaten 92 propelled them to a six-run victory over Lancashire.

The Kenyan Yobes Ondieki broke the world record for the 10,000 metres in 26min 58.38sec, the first time that the 27-minute barrier has been broken.

A new British football transfer record was set when Duncan Ferguson moved from Dundee United to Rangers for pounds 3.75m.
