AT Headingley, Great Britain beat New Zealand at rugby league again, completing a 3-0 whitewash over the tourists; but three days later, at Galashiels, the union All Blacks thumped South of Scotland 84-5. Canada beat Wales in Cardiff the same day.

The big fight went to Evander Holyfield, who surprisingly beat Riddick Bowe by more than the thickness of a parachute to regain the IBF and WBA world heayweight titles.

The F1 season ended with Ayrton Senna beating the new world champion Alain Prost in Adelaide, Senna's last race for McLaren, Prost's last race.

In football, Eric Cantona treated us to the full range of his charms, scoring two goals in the Manchester derby before picking up a four-match European ban for losing his temper in Turkey. And Graham Taylor gave Blackburn's Stuart Ripley as his final answer to half of England's prayers in Bologna next Wednesday.
