The international swimming federation, FINA, have banned two world-class swimmers for two years, after testing positive for banned substances. Anne Chagnaud, the French long-distance swimmer, tested positive for Etilephrine at the Marathon World Series event in Tapes, Brazil, in January. The second, Petteri Lehtinen of Finland, who failed to report he had been using an asthmatic inhaler containing Salbutamol, which is permitted, had his appeal rejected by FINA and his two-year suspension for use of Salbutamo was confirmed. FINA, which has been criticised for a lack of resolve against doping, said a special out-of-competition testing program will be put in place before next year's Altanta Olympics "with a considerable increase in the number of tests."
