NFL Draft 2015: Jamies Winston selected first overall by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers selected Florida State Seminoles quarterback Jameis Winston with the first pick of the 2015 NFL Draft in Chicago.

Winston, 21, won 26 of 27 matches during his two years at college, and won the Heisman Trophy in 2013 as the outstanding player in college.

The Buccaneers, who finished last season with just two wins from their 16 games, last reached the play-offs in 2007 and Winston will be seen as the cornerstone to turn the struggling franchise around.

Despite being seen as the premier talent in this year's draft, there were question marks over Winston with the quarterback involved in a shoplifting incident (he stole crabs legs) and an alleged rape in 2012. Winston did not attend the draft and opted to choose to stay at home in Alabama - where he opted to celebrate by eating crab.

Despite a host of pre-Draft rumours, the Tennessee Titans selected Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota with the No 2 pick, despite trade offers from the Philadelphia Eagles and Cleveland Browns; Mariota won the Heisman Trophy last year with the Ducks.

Defensive end Dante Fowler, who attended the event wearing gold shoes, was chosen by the Jacksonville Jaguars, while the Oakland Raiders, needing weapons for talented quarterback Derek Carr, selected wide receiver Amari Cooper of Alabama.

In the first surprise of the draft, the Washington Redskins picked versatile tackle Brandon Scherff from Iowa, while the New York Jets further boosted their already stacked offensive line after they brought in Leonard Williams of USC.

Kevin White was the second wide receiver to be drafted and he received a standing ovation from the Chicago crowd after he was selected by the Bears.

Winston speaking to the NFL network said: "(This is) very special. I am blessed with the opportunity and am thankful my family is here.

"I'm going to Tampa Bay, it is so surreal. Shout out to the Tampa Bay nation and I look forward to earning the spot and earning some wins.

"I am going to embrace this opportunity to be a Buc now."

The Atlanta Falcons picked Clemson defensive end Vic Beasley, while tackle Ereck Flowers was selected by the New York Giants.

Todd Gurley became the first running back to be drafted in the first round for three years after he was selected at 10 by the St Louis Rams.

Trae Waynes was the first cornerback selected in this year's draft and will play for the Minnesota Vikings, while the Cleveland Browns, with their first of two first round picks went for defensive tackle Danny Shelton.

Another tackle, Andrus Peat went to the New Orleans Saints, while the Miami Dolphins chose wide receiver Devante Parker.

In a draft expected to be littered with trades it took until pick 15, when the San Diego Chargers moved up two places, ahead of the San Francisco 49ers, to bring in running back Melvin Gordon.

The Chargers gave up a fourth round pick in this years draft and fifth in next years to San Francisco to move up.

Cornerback Kevin Johnson went to the Houston Texans, defensive end Arik Armstead was selected by the San Francisco 49ers and Marcus Peters, who was kicked off his Washington college team, was chosen by the Kansas City Chiefs.

Guard Cameron Erving joined the Cleveland Browns, wide receiver Nelson Agholor the Philadelphia Eagles and Cedric Ogbuehi the Cincinnati Bengals.

The Pittsburgh Steelers chose linebacker Bud Dupree, the Denver Broncos defensive end Shane Ray and the Arizona Cardinals tackle DJ Humphries.

Linebacker Shaq Thompson was selected by the Washington Redskins, wide receiver Breshad Perriman by the Baltimore Ravens and defensive back Byron Jones by the Dallas Cowboys.

The Detroit Tigers brought in guard Laken Tomlinson, Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Phillip Dorsett and Green Bay Packers defensive back Damarious Randall.

The New Orleans Saints used the pick they got for trading Jimmy Graham to the Seattle Seahawks by bringing in linebacker Stephone Anthony, while last season's Super Bowl winners the New England Patriots added defensive tackle Malcolm Brown to their roster.

Round two of the draft will take place tonight.
