Tom Brady enjoyed a winning return to action as the New England Patriots extended the Cleveland Browns' losing start to the NFL season.

The Patriots quarterback missed the first four games of the campaign as he served a suspension in relation to deflated footballs used in an AFC Championship game in 2015.

But he made up for lost time by throwing for 406 yards and three touchdowns to Martellus Bennett in a 33-13 triumph for the Patriots, who lost their 100 per cent record to the Buffalo Bills last time out.

It was a fifth straight loss for a Cleveland team that never recovered after taking a 23-7 deficit into half-time.

Adam Thielen made a career-high 127 yards as the Minnesota Vikings continued their perfect start with a 31-13 win over the Houston Texans.

Matt Prater kicked a late 29-yard field goal and Darius Slay made a crucial interception to edge the Detroit Lions past the Philadelphia Eagles 24-23.

The New York Jets suffered their third loss in a row as the Pittsburgh Steelers scored 24 unanswered points to earn a 31-13 win and move to 4-1.

The Indianapolis Colts bounced back from last week's Wembley defeat to Jacksonville with a 29-23 success against the Chicago Bears. The Colts were the first team not to take a bye week immediately after playing in London.

The Washington Redskins produced a strong defensive performance to beat the Baltimore Ravens 16-10 for a third straight win, while Marcus Mariota threw for three touchdowns and helped himself to one on the ground as the Tennessee Titans snapped a two-game losing streak with a 30-17 win over the Miami Dolphins.

The Denver Broncos suffered their first loss of the season, going down 23-16 at home to Atlanta. Matt Ryan completed 15 of 28 yards for 267 yards and a touchdown for the Falcons.

Oakland quarterback Derek Carr threw a go-ahead 21-yard TD pass to Michael Crabtree as the Raiders improved to 4-1 with a 34-41 victory over the San Diego Chargers.

Dallas also improved to 4-1, rookie Ezekiel Elliott rushing for 134 yards and two touchdowns as the Cowboys toppled the Cincinnati Bengals 28-14.

Aaron Rodgers threw two touchdowns passes in the Green Bay Packers' 23-16 triumph over the New York Giants, while LeSean McCoy ran 18 times for 150 yards as the Buffalo Bills defeated the Rams 30-19 in Los Angeles for their straight win.
