VOX POP: What measures would you take to improve Formula One's appeal?

CRAIG POLLOCK

MANAGING DIRECTOR, BAR

Every team principal, along with Max [Mosley] and Bernie [Ecclestone], needs to take a huge step back and look from the outside, put themselves into the shoes of the people who are actually paying for the sport - the public. Then we need to get together, the 75 per cent of the time we're not racing, and work as a team. We need to put egos aside, and work as one. Then lock ourselves in a room and come up with a brain-storming session. The sport should be fair and everybody should have a fair crack of the whip. At the moment it isn't like that.

MAX MOSLEY

FIA PRESIDENT

I think that it should never be easy to overtake, especially in Formula One, but perhaps now it is a little bit too difficult. But it is important that we don't change the regulations too much, too often. The best racing always follows a period of rule stability. Of course we can make changes, but I think we need to consider what to do quite carefully before we actually go ahead and do anything. I would particularly like to cut downforce in high-speed corners, but I don't like the idea of going back to slick tyres.

DAMON HILL

1996 WORLD CHAMPION

I have said several times that these current Formula One cars give me the least enjoyment I have ever had in my career. Overtaking should never be easy, but neither should it be impossible. It needs to be almost impossible, but so that there is always just that chance it can happen. I'd like to see the cars far less reliant on their aerodynamics. We've got to get them to the point where they can be raced against one another again, and right now they can't get close enough to each other for you to be able to do that.

JOHNNY HERBERT

FORMER BRITISH GP WINNER

I would like to see Formula One cars go back to slick tyres, because they have better grip. It's not just that you need more mechanical rather than aerodynamic grip; you need that grip to be consistent, and slicks permit that. I'd also like to see a reduction in the influence of aerodynamics. Make the wings a standard size, and do away with the diffusor underneath the car. That way they would be less sensitive aerodynamically, and therefore you would be able to get closer to other cars and to race more.

ALAN JENKINS

PROST TECHNICAL DIRECTOR

I'd like to see fewer chicanes on the circuits. They ruin overtaking. If you cannot get ahead going into a chicane, forget it. You have no chance once you reach it. Instead I'd like to see more tight corners, because they give the drivers more opportunity to fight all the way through even if one isn't alongside the other on the entry point. As for the subject of slick versus grooved tyres, all- weather tyres make more sense than grooves to me if we have to do something different.

GARY ANDERSON

STEWART TECHNICAL DIRECTOR

Maybe after Magny-Cours we should damp down sections of track by surprise. I'd like to see a return to slicks, hand-in-hand with a reduction in aerodynamics to avoid a similar speed spiral. You need a proper independent aero research programme, and in six months you'd have a pretty good set of proposals. In American ChampCars a lot of tracks have banking so there is more than one line. The corner on to the straight at Barcelona is too quick, and that spoils the aerodynamics there so nobody overtakes.
