Wimbledon 97: Quotes of the day
Tuesday 24 June 1997
"I have much more confidence playing on grass and just feel much better on this surface. Last year, before going to Wimbledon, I just didn't feel good on grass and this year I feel very happy, very loose and really enjoying playing on grass." Richard Krajiceck, who made a winning start to his defence of the Wimbledon title by beating Germany's Marcello Craca 7-6, 6-2, 6-4.
"This is the 12th year I've lined up here. Usually I'd only come on the Saturday but I wanted to make sure I could get tickets for Court One - you could call me a tennis addict." Frances Burgess, aged 37, from Oxford, who pitched her igloo tent on the footpath at the main entrance to Wimbledon at 8pm on Friday to ensure she could get a seat for the opening of Court One.
"It was a great honour to play first on No 1." Tim Henman.
"Who, me?" John McEnroe, after being introduced to the capacity crowd on Court One as a man of "golden touch and fiery temperament".
