Well Winston, I'm not quite sure I agree, certainly our Lords and masters probably believe that a classics degree from Oxford is worth more than a University of of Southampton engineering degree but if your heart and desire is to design and build power boat engines or join the navy as an engineering officer then maybe the engineering degree is more valuable. As for the Sorbonne, I thought degrees from there were rather like diamond tiaras, nice bit of decoration, but not really necessary. And for Manchester, where after all Rutherford did his key work, a first in physics should be sufficient to get you an opening at any place that considers a degree in physics an appropriate qualification. Pretty valuable if you want to go on to further our understanding of the Universe or if you want to build a career with Microsoft or in the City. Possibly less good if your career aims are to marry a minor European princeling or be part of the decor in a Bond Street Gallery.

Enough state school pupils are going to University. However the "oiks" are doing proportionately more Mickey Mouse degrees as the proportion of these degrees increase in number. Whereas a proportionately higher number of Rah-Rahs are doing degrees at "established" universities.
Also and separately from this a Desmond 2:2 in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Southampton, sadly is still not worth a Geoff 1st from Oxford in Fine Art & Classics.
Or lets say a degree in Christianity & Taoism from the Sorbonne means more than a degree in Physics fro the University of Manchester, I think you catch my drift.
