2,600 find university place through clearing system

The race for a university place started in the early hours of this morning and resulted in a record number of searches.
At noon today, nearly 308,000 searches for Clearing vacancies had been made on the UCAS website.
A lucky 2,628 students managed to bag themselves an offer through Clearing by midday, an increase of 6.5 per cent on last year.
The rate of prospective university students logging on to the UCAS website has also increased.
Track – the service UCAS applicants can use to check the status of their application – received 451,331 logins by midday, peaking at 86 logins per second. The peak last year was 72 logins per second, and the number of logins was 387,430.
Anthony McClaran, chief executive of UCAS, said: “Our admissions colleagues in the universities and colleges have worked incredibly hard to ensure that, despite the very large rise in the number of applications, decisions are being made quicker than ever”.
Currently 111,388 applicants – 20 per cent all university applicants – are eligible for Clearing.
