As many as 1,000 students from all over the country convened on the University of Sussex yesterday, to vent their frustrations with a management determined to press ahead with vastly unpopular outsourcing plans.

The university's campus at Falmer, near Lewes, became a hive of protest as students, faculty and staff came out in force to protest the University's dogged plans to outsource its services.

Photographer Morten Watkins was there to capture the action. Click here to launch a gallery of his best shots.

A spokesman for the occupiers said: "Today sees the emergence of a reinvigorated community, both at Sussex, across other universities, and throughout public sector institutions bearing the brunt of Students and faculty met during the demonstration to plan and discuss how we grow and support each other in this united struggle.

"In occupying all cafes on campus, we have provided staff the opportunity to join our demonstration at 1pm. Moreover a clear message is sent to Sodexo that they are not welcomed to our campus, and action will continually be taken to stop this."
