Totti retired from the Azzurri after the winning the World Cup in 2006 but there was speculation he may come out of international retirement to help Italy defend the World Cup if he was chosen by Marcello Lippi.<br/>
Despite a number of injury problems Totti had a fine campaign as he led Claudio Ranieri's Roma to runner-up in Serie A and a Coppa Italia Final. Lippi was not swayed in the end by Totti's 14 goals in 23 league appearances.
