The British No 1 Elena Baltacha missed out on a place in the last eight of the Pattaya Open in Thailand yesterday after a 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 defeat by the Chinese sixth seed, Peng Shuai.

Winning her first Grand Slam tournament was meant to be the making of Ana Ivanovic, but the 20-year-old Serb's summer went from bad to worse last night when she was knocked out of the US Open by a qualifier. Henin's desert dominance comes to an end in gruelling contest

It took five tournaments and 18 matches to achieve but an opponent finally got the better of Justine Henin at the Barclays Dubai Championships here last night. Francesca Schiavone, a 27-year-old Italian, was the unlikely giant-slayer as Henin suffered her first defeat at the Aviation Club.
