Sea of Bees, Hoxton Square Bar and Kitchen, London
Friday 20 April 2012
Sea of Bees, real name Julie Ann Baenziger, has often been described as a shy, nervy singer. Having never seen her live before I was expecting Laura Marling-esque reticence and hunched shoulders. But in front of a squealing audience of a couple of hundred at the oversold black box venue in Hoxton, “Jules” as she’s known, was so at ease with us and herself that she (somehow) appeared achingly cool, but without artifice.

Thomas Kinkade: US artist whose populist works sold by the million
Friday 13 April 2012
Thomas Kinkade was America's most prolific and successful popular artist of the last 100 years. Calling himself the "Painter of Light", a term he trademarked, he claimed to have an example of his work in one in 20 of the country's homes. Kinkade turned the production of his sentimentally themed paintings, prints and posters, mugs and calendars into an enterprise, the Media Arts Group, which made him over $50m between 1997 and 2005. Explaining his motivation, he said, "There's been million-seller books and million-seller CDs. But there hasn't been, until now, million-seller art. We have found a way to bring to millions of people an art that they can understand."

Mary Ann Sieghart: The Tories will need more blue-skies thinking to win the next election
Monday 05 March 2012
Years ago, back when Boris still needed a surname, a young Steve Hilton hoped to run for Mayor of London. But the Tories were nowhere near ready to choose a shaven-headed, tieless iconoclast as their candidate. Later, Hilton tried to be selected as an MP, but although he looked like many a metropolitan media professional, he was far too modern for the Conservative local associations. They preferred the throwback of a good-looking, public-school banker in pin-stripes.
