Superhero comic takes on al-Qa'ida

The Arab world can take graphic art seriously, as any Danish cartoonist will attest, so goodness knows what sort of response will greet the comic industry's latest mooted blockbuster publication: a tale about al-Qa'ida that was designed, in the words of its creator, to "really piss people off".

The Man of Steel may be able to leap tall buildings in a single bound, but he may struggle to jump over this staggeringly comprehensive DVD collection of Superman movies released by Warner.

Leading article: Krypton factor

It is no wonder that reports that Superman is considering renouncing his US citizenship are causing consternation across the Atlantic. He might have been born on Krypton, but Superman, more than any other superhero, has always exuded Americana. Were he not invulnerable, the man of steel would probably bleed red, white and blue.

Superman becomes a super-rebel – and scourge of the American right

He's still a firm believer in truth and justice, but the world's foremost superhero is no longer sure he can carry on proudly endorsing the American way. As he approaches his 80th birthday, Superman has made a shock decision: he intends to renounce his US citizenship.

Sucker Punch (12A)

Starring: Emily Browning, Vanessa Hudgens, Jon Hamm

Joanne Siegel: Artist’s model for the original incarnation of Lois Lane

Some time in the mid-1930s, the teenaged Joanne Kovacs placed an ad in the Cleveland Plain Dealer seeking modelling jobs. The only response she pursued turned out to come from two young men, just out of their teens. Joe Shuster was an artist who wanted her to pose for his drawings of the girlfriend of the superhero he and writer Jerry Siegel were creating. The hero was Superman, the girl was eventually named Lois Lane, and 15 years later, Kovacs, who has died aged 93, became Mrs Jerry Siegel.

'Le Batman Francais' finds a formidable foe in right-wing America

Holy baguettes, Batman. Your brand-new French lieutenant – aka "le Batman Francais" – is already in trouble. This must be a job for the caped crusader, or maybe the crusader with a képé.
