Buick franks Dettori's judgement with fine treble

Sheikh Mohammed may have vexed him in fast-tracking Mickael Barzalona but Frankie Dettori is himself no mean judge of young riding talent. It was his endorsement that helped to persuade another long-standing patron, John Gosden, that William Buick deserved the chance as stable jockey – and here they are, barely two years later, taking Royal Ascot by storm.

Fugue tunes up for Oaks challenge

The theme stated so boldly over its opening bars may yet recur inexorably through the Classic season, but some ears are beginning to pick up a developing counterpoint. Having already won the 1,000 and 2,000 Guineas, horses trained by Aidan O'Brien dominate betting on both Epsom Classics. Only the freakishly energetic Humphrey Carpenter ever seemed to relish the experience, as he charted the heyday of Waugh, Powell, Betjeman and co in The Brideshead Generation.
